Richard Massie – Chairman
Chairman Massie brought the PDL back to Sea Island for the 3rd time. However, this was a year of two firsts: the Fountain of Youth Cup was contested on a single golf course – Seaside Golf Links, home of the PGA’s McGladrey Classic and the Ponce moved to the Summer from its January weekend.
Red Numbers Battle It Out and Return Home as Champions
As it states in the PDL players guide, “This is what it is all about” – Sunday singles
matches. Money Shot brought their best by taking six of eight possible points, but it
wasn’t enough to outlast Red Numbers or BCT. The Red Numbers got it done in dramatic
fashion by inching it out against BCT. After Neil Thomson and Richard Massie gained decisive
wins for the Red Numbers 4 & 2 and 5 & 4 respectively, BCT kept pace as Jeremy Bird and
Clay Thomson won their matches 5 & 3 and 2 & 1 respectively. As the matches wound down, it
became clear that the Jamie Rankin vs. Westray Battle match would decide the Ponce. BCT needed
a win to force a full-team sudden death playoff and plans were underway as Rankin stepped to
the 16th tee dormie with a 3-hole lead with 3 to play. After two pars by Battle on 16 and 17, the
match became the only players left on the course as the entire Ponce followed Battle and Rankin
onto 18. Battle outlasted Rankin in a war of attrition and halved the match, earning the clinching
point for the Red Numbers 13-11 over Runner-up BCT. Ironically, after squaring the first hole of the
day, Battle was down to Rankin the entire match, until the 18th hole. Of particular note, all
four teams won one of the rounds this year. The win by Red Numbers puts Andrew Hollowell
and Neil Thomson ahead of the pack for most Ponce championships with four, are they the
greatest ever? With four rounds on the Seaside Course, was this the most physically and/or
mentally grueling Ponce to date? One thing the winners do know for sure, as part of their
prize, each of the four competitors will receive an all-access pass to the PGA TOUR’S
McGladrey Classic at Sea Island Golf Club on October 7-10. Congratulations!!
