2003 – Scottsdale – Team #1 Wins Inaugural PDL

Tournament Summary

Neil Thomson, Henry Massie, Jamie Rankin and Muscoe Garnett Win Inaugural PDL in Arizona Desert.

Neil Thomson organized a trip for eight guys to Scottsdale for the first Ponce De Leon Invitational. The matches were contested over four rounds at Legend Trail (stroke play), Dove Valley Ranch (four ball) , Rancho Manana (Captain’s Choice) and Grayhawk Talon. (singles match play.) “Team Number #1” won the event, which kicked off many of the traditions, which would endure the test of time, such as the Champions Dinner wager, the four round format and the trophy.

Random Memories

  • Henry Massie got pulled over for speeding in Team #1’s van!
  • The losing team was named Team Apache, consisting of John McAllister, Tom Keratzes, John Klim and Wes Battle.
  • And of course, most memorably, on the 17th island green on Grayhawk Talon, who could forget when Johnny Mac asked Muscie if he could see his wallet, and after being handed it, launched Muscie off the bridge into the reclaimed lake that surrounded the green. It is hard to forget seeing Muscie flail away in the water as he scrambled to climb up the bank, leaving his putter at the bottom of the lake. Muscie attempted to throw Mac’s clubs in the water and is hard to remember if he succeeded or not. The spectacle of Garnett furiously walking up 18 in his boxers is one I will never forget.

Only the singles results survived.
